Stuffy Nose? An Orgasm Might Clear Things Up

A hypothesis in Medical Hypotheses links ejaculation to nasal relief, but it comes with some very practical caveats

A blocked nose is hardly foreplay. But getting off might give you a little breathing room.

In a 2008 paper published in Medical Hypotheses, Iranian researcher Sina Zarrintan proposed that ejaculation could ease nasal congestion. The operative word: proposed. It was a hypothesis, not proof that sex belongs in the allergy aisle.

Years later, researchers put the broader idea to the test. A small study published online in 2021 in the Ear, Nose & Throat Journal found that sex ending in orgasm improved nasal breathing about as much as a decongestant spray for up to an hour. Finally, some heavy breathing with a practical upside.

The catch? The improvement appeared only in participants with more substantial nasal obstruction. And the afterglow outlasted the nasal benefits: Three hours after sex, breathing had returned to baseline, while the spray was still providing relief.

That is evidence of temporary congestion relief, not a demonstrated cure for hay fever or its full menu of itchy, sneezy misery. “An orgasm might help you breathe easier” has some research behind it. “Cancel your antihistamines” does not.

Still, as potential bedroom bonuses go, clearer nasal passages deserve a mention. Romance is alive. It just has tissues on the nightstand.
